Santa Rosa del Cuareim Archaeological Museum

Inaugurated on August 30, 2004, in Bella Unión, the Santa Rosa del Cuareim Archaeological Museum was founded by historian and collector Julio César Cardoso, affectionately known as Tucho, who dedicated his life to preserving the region's archaeological heritage. After his death, his legacy continues through this private museum, which houses a collection of nearly 4,000 pieces. Among the exhibits are arrowheads, bows, bolas, mortars, and indigenous puzzles. Many of these pieces come from Tucho's personal collection, while others have been donated by residents and visitors, necessitating the constant expansion of the exhibition cases. The museum has welcomed hundreds of local and international visitors over the years. Currently, visits must be arranged in advance, as the museum is no longer open to the public. For more information or to schedule a visit, please contact him in advance.

Your Destination in the Triple Border of Uruguay

Sugarcane Cutters: Tribute to the Cutters
Who are the Peludos? The "peludos" are the sugarcane harvest workers in Bella Unión.
The name comes from the armadillo, a typical animal of the area, due to its hunched gait and the blackened appearance it acquires after the sugarcane is cut. Cutting Technique: When the sugarcane is ripe, it is first burned to remove the leaves. This leaves only the clean, charred stem, ready for cutting. Harvesting is done manually with a machete. The cut stems are grouped into "chorras" for transport. A Grueling Task: After cutting the burnt sugarcane, the armadillos are covered in molasses and soot.
At the end of the day, they are so blackened that they cannot recognize each other.
Many people suck sugarcane during work to stay active and energized. A Living Tradition. Sugarcane farming is part of Bella Unión's identity and is a key source of employment for the city and department of Artigas. World-Class Harvest. In recent years, sugarcane production in Bella Unión has grown so much that it is now on par with the world's leading sugarcane centers. Bella Unión: Tradition, effort, and culture in every harvest.

Nuestro Carnaval
